Early Years Activities: Providing a support network
New mum Anna explains how she benefitted from early years activities, boosting her confidence and wellbeing.
Worcestershire’s Libraries offer regular Storytime and Bounce and Rhyme activities across the county which provide positive experiences for babies and pre-school children. In 2024 there were over 33,000 adult attendances and 43,000 children & baby attendances at 33,000 Storytime and Bounce and Rhyme activities in libraries.
As well as promoting good life chances for babies and pre-school children, these activities are highly valued by many new parents for connecting them with other young families at a time when it is easy to become isolated.
Anna's story
Anna explains how attending regular Bounce and Rhyme activities at Hagley Library as a new mum, allowed her to share experiences and form new friendships.
"When I became a new mum in Hagley, I had no nearby friends or family and was the first in my circle to have a child. At antenatal classes, I met another mum-to-be, and together we started attending the library’s Bounce and Rhyme group once our babies arrived. There, I formed friendships with many other parents and carers, many of whom I’m still in touch with today. We shared the ups and downs of early parenthood, swapped baby care tips, and found reassurance in each other’s experiences. Having this support network helped ease the isolation of those early months."
"Less than two years later, after having premature twin girls, the library became even more vital. It was a safe, welcoming space close to home and manageable when many other things weren’t. My toddler could socialise in a fun, familiar environment, and I could reconnect with other adults, which did wonders for my mental well-being. Simply having a reason to get out of the house, chat with others, and feel part of a community made a huge difference to my confidence and emotional health."
"The library wasn’t just about books; it became a place of encouragement, connection, and support. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone and that small moments of interaction could have a big impact on my well-being. Now, I always recommend Bounce and Rhyme to new mums, knowing first-hand how much it helps families not only build friendships but also support their overall health and happiness."
