Current Electric Vehicle (EV) charging projects and strategy

Find out about the Council’s plan in supporting and rolling out EV charging infrastructure.

The UK Government’s Road to Zero Strategy restricts the sale of fossil-fuelled cars from 2030. No new diesel and petrol cars can be sold from this date and no plug-in hybrid vehicles (using batteries and diesel or petrol) from 2035.

This will mean that car owners will increasingly be encouraged to move away from petrol and diesel cars towards electric vehicles.

Supporting the transition

Worcestershire is one of eight local authorities, across the Midlands, that have successfully bid for £20.64m of funding in early 2025, aimed at getting more public electric vehicle chargers into areas with limited off-street parking.

£3.5 million of Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) capital funding has been awarded to Worcestershire County Council which will be used to leverage additional private investment into the local area. We have been working with a consortium of three other County Councils to procure a chargepoint operator to supply, install and operate a network of EV chargers. Working in a wider consortium has allowed for greater influence in the market and therefore greater ability to provide the solutions that our residents need to support them in driving an EV.

Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund

The LEVI fund is a Central Government fund supporting local authorities in England to work with the chargepoint industry to improve rollout and commercialisation of public chargepoint for residents that don’t have off-street parking.

The fund aims to:

  • deliver a step-change in the deployment of local, primarily low power, on-street charging infrastructure across England
  • accelerate the commercialisation of, and investment in, the local charging infrastructure sector

Chargers delivered under LEVI will primarily be located in areas which support residents that do not have the ability to install their own charge point at home. This would generally therefore cater for residents that have to park on the street as opposed to a private driveway or garage.

Worcestershire Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy

This strategy sets out how the County Council and its partners intend to support the transition to electric vehicles and help to coordinate the development of accessible chargepoints across the County. The primary focus of this strategy will be on delivering electric vehicle charging solutions for use by households without dedicated off-street parking at home through the deployment of the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund.

Please note: the final Worcestershire Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy will be made available shortly.
