Information about the schemes that protect the names of foods.
UK geographical indication (GI) schemes that protect the geographical names of food, drink and agricultural products, and the UK GI schemes registers.
Food, drink, and agricultural products that have a geographical link or are made using traditional methods can be registered and protected as intellectual property under a geographical indication (GI).
GI protection ensures a product's unique qualities, reputation, authenticity, and origin, safeguarding the name from misuse or imitation.
In the UK, GI schemes protect registered product names when sold in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales).
In the EU, GI schemes protect registered product names when sold in Northern Ireland and the EU.
Any product names successfully registered with the EU GI schemes by December 31, 2020, are protected under both UK and EU GI schemes.
You can protect a geographic food, drink, spirit drink or wine, search the registers, find out more about the process and benefits of protection at: Protected geographical food and drink names: UK GI schemes - GOV.UK.
