Get school ready with Worcestershire Libraries

Is your little one starting school this year? Are you wondering if they are ready? Worcestershire Libraries is here to support the journey!

Starting school is a significant milestone in a child’s life, and it can be both exciting and daunting for parents and children alike. Libraries understand these challenges and are dedicated to helping families feel prepared and confident as they take this key step into ‘big school.’

Libraries play a crucial role in helping children socialise with others. They help to:

  • foster the development of essential fine and gross motor skills
  • enhance children's thinking and understanding of the world around them
  • improve children's coordination and language abilities

Libraries Connected research suggests that, “An overwhelming 97% of teachers recommend that parents enrol their children with their local library to prepare for starting school, while 94% advise parents with children starting school in September to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.”

Worcestershire Libraries play a crucial role in preparing children for school by fostering the skills necessary for a successful transition into the classroom.

How libraries can help

Storytimes

Engaging Storytime sessions introduce children to the joy of reading, enhance their listening skills, and ignite their imaginations. These interactive sessions are designed to develop early literacy skills in a fun and welcoming environment.

Reading together guidance

Resources and tips are provided for parents on how to read together with their children effectively. Reading together not only strengthens the parent-child bond but also builds a solid foundation for literacy and a lifelong love of books.

Establishing a routine

Consistency is key when preparing for school. Libraries offer advice on how to establish a daily routine that includes regular reading time. This helps children understand the importance of routines and makes the transition to school smoother.

Non-Fiction parenting books

An extensive collection of non-fiction books for parents covers a range of topics from school readiness to child development. These resources offer practical advice and strategies to support your child’s educational journey.

Summer Reading Challenge

If your child is four years old, they can participate in the FREE Summer Reading Challenge. This initiative encourages children to read books over the summer, keeping their skills sharp and boosting their confidence as they prepare for school.

Special get school ready bookbags

Subject to availability, libraries will have special 'Get School Ready' bookbags filled with books relating to starting school, tips, advice, and more. These bookbags are a great resource for parents and children, providing a comprehensive toolkit to make the transition to school smooth and enjoyable.
