Primary school library visit: Fostering a lifelong love of reading
Library visits for schools promote a love of reading and learning.
In 2024, Worcestershire’s libraries hosted 502 school visits, providing over 16,000 pupils with focused sessions that support national curriculum objectives.
Libraries inspire children to be ambitious and curious when reading for pleasure and deliver key messages about continuing development and reading beyond the classroom.
Library visits for schools promote a love of reading and learning, inspire curiosity and ambition and encourage socialising, cognitive functioning and the evaluation of ideas.
Gemma, a primary school teacher at Tudor Grange explains how visiting The Hive with her Reception Class supports the children’s development and fosters a love of reading for pleasure.
Gemma’s Story (Primary School Teacher, Tudor Grange)
“I plan our visits to support my children's understanding of their local area and to develop a love of reading and books. The children get so much from these visits, which is why we keep coming back! In the library's welcoming environment, they not only explore shelves brimming with books but also engage in storytelling sessions carefully tailored by the library staff.
“Visiting the library supports our curriculum as it allows the children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world by visiting a place in their local area alongside promoting independence. Our literacy strands are met as they are given lots of opportunities to read books, have stories read to them and to further develop their comprehension skills. For us, it is a fantastic trip that touches on so many areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.”
“The partnership between Tudor Grange School and The Hive exemplifies how local resources can be harnessed to enrich education. Reading is an essential skill for our children to develop, and I want to foster a love of books and stories from an early age. The library trip makes this possible in a fun, relaxed, and welcoming environment.”
