Libraries Unlocked: opening Worcestershire’s libraries for community use

Libraries Unlocked encourages greater use of libraries by community organisations, with many taking advantage of extended opening hours and free room hire to introduce new community-led events.

Between April and June 2024, over 430 hours of partner led activity was delivered by over 60 community partners and volunteers during Libraries Unlocked opening hours, fostering a vibrant community spirit in the library and increasing the value of libraries as a community asset.

Ben’s Story

Using the library for the Scouts' Hobby Badge programme during Libraries Unlocked hours was a fabulous experience. It provided a free, well-equipped, and safe space for my Scouts group to complete their Hobby Badge. The space offered the children a new environment to explore hobbies and discover that the library is much more than just a place for reading books. It's a hub for learning, joining groups, picking up new hobbies, accessing technology, and more!

Using the library during unlocked hours was incredibly easy. The library staff provided a clear induction that made me feel confident about using the space.

The freedom to access it outside regular hours is such a great idea, and I believe more people should take advantage of it. The library felt like a welcoming space where everyone could come together and learn.

Other Libraries Unlocked users say

"Brilliant idea and it's enabled us as a family to access the library more."

“As a working Mum extended hours has allowed us to pop in at times the library wouldn’t be open normally.”

“Best thing Worcestershire Libraries have done since the introduction of self service.”
