Following approval from the County Council Cabinet earlier today (24 October 2024), Worcestershire County Council is set to embark on a new chapter of transport planning.
The Council’s Streetscape Design Guide will soon open for public engagement, inviting residents, developers, planners, and local stakeholders to help shape the future of the county's streets.
The engagement period for the draft Streetscape Design Guide is scheduled to run from 4 November 2024 to 27 January 2025, offering an opportunity for the community to contribute their thoughts and ideas.
The guide is designed to set a new standard for highway design in Worcestershire, reflecting the latest Government policies and guidelines. It introduces a comprehensive toolkit that can be used by everyone involved in shaping the streetscape, whether a developer, planner, or local resident. The goal is to ensure that streets are designed to be green, clean, accessible, and sustainable.
Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, emphasised the importance of community involvement in this process. He said,
"We want streets in Worcestershire that are green, clean, and accessible. This isn’t just for planners and designers, but for everyday people who use our streets and want to see Worcestershire thrive. I encourage everyone to have their say when the engagement period opens on 4th November, as their views will inform key improvements across the county."
The Streetscape Design Guide aims to deliver high-quality, sustainable spaces that meet the needs of all users, whether they are walking, wheeling, cycling, or using public transport.
The vision is to create places that are safe, practical, and aesthetically pleasing, while also protecting ecological habitats and biodiversity through the intelligent use of green space.
The guide also respects Worcestershire's character, proposing designs that are sensitive to local heritage and conservation areas. Built with longevity in mind, it ensures that new streetscapes are not only easy to maintain but also built to last, contributing to a more attractive and sustainable future for local communities.
For those interested in improving Worcestershire’s streetscape, this consultation represents a pivotal opportunity to influence the development of better-designed, more inclusive streetscapes.
The engagement exercise launches on 4th November, and you can make sure your voice is heard by visiting the Designing Worcestershire's streets and highways infrastructure pages of our website.
