Members of Worcestershire Youth Cabinet got together last week to look through their time capsule video of the Covid-19 2020 lockdown.
During the first stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, children and young people submitted their time capsule entries in the form of videos, photos and pictures to demonstrate their experiences of the 2020 lockdown. Entries included photos of empty high streets and taped off playgrounds, pictures of rainbows and poems about missing being with friends.
The Youth Cabinet met, alongside Councillor Steve Mackay, to watch the video of all the entries and reflect on what they have achieved since the pandemic.
Cllr Steve Mackay, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Children and Families said: “It was great to watch the time capsule celebration, it certainly brought back memories of the 2020 lockdown and the challenges our children and young people faced.
“It’s really important for me to come along to the Youth Cabinet meetings to hear about all the things that are effecting the lives of children and young people in Worcestershire. This is reported back to the Corporate Parenting Board which is a great help in making decisions about the support and services we’re providing for them.”
Worcestershire Youth Cabinet provides a platform for young people aged 11 to 18 to express their opinions and get involved in political matters. Through various initiatives and events, the Youth Cabinet aims to empower young individuals and ensure their voices are heard.
Anusha Salhan, Chair of Worcestershire Youth Cabinet said: “Watching the Time Capsule created during lockdown was particularly impactful for me, as it was the pandemic that initially motivated me to join. I was driven by a desire to help my community and other young people like myself, and since taking on the role of Chair last year, I am proud of the progress we have made.
“As we prepare to release our manifesto in the coming months, reflecting on the growth of our peers in the wake of the pandemic has been both grounding and inspiring. It has strengthened our resolve to continue making a positive difference and ensuring we serve our community to the best of our ability.”
Youth Cabinet member, Miki, aged 18 said: “I joined Youth Cabinet because I wanted to socialise with people more and do what I do best to help young people to have their voices heard and make a difference.”
14 year old Tyler, another member of the Youth Cabinet added: “I joined Youth Cabinet because I was interested in making a change as a lot of young people are mistreated.”
