Works to prepare for new walking and cycling bridge in Worcester to get underway

The works will start during the week beginning 31 January 2022 to remove a number of trees on the western end of Gheluvelt Park, where Kepax Bridge will be built.

The works are taking place in connection with Kepax Bridge, which will see the construction of a new crossing over the River Severn. The bridge will help to provide improved cycle and pedestrian connectivity to the north of Worcester City.

Councillor Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “These works need to be carried out ahead of the main construction contract being awarded later this year. 

“The works are in accordance with the planning approval given for Kepax Bridge on 29 September 2021 and replacement trees will be planted later on in the programme. Obviously, our contractor will remove as little vegetation as possible, and they are carrying out the work now to avoid the bird nesting season”.

Building on the success of Sabrina Bridge and Diglis Bridge, Worcestershire County Council and Worcester City Council are working in partnership to provide this new walking and cycling bridge over the River Severn between Gheluvelt Park and Kepax.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Leader of Worcester City Council, said: “The start of work to prepare for the building of the Kepax Bridge is an exciting moment. The bridge will bring a major boost for the health and wellbeing of people who live or work in Worcester, encouraging many more to walk and cycle around our beautiful city. Combined with the Diglis and Sabrina bridges, the Kepax Bridge will create an attractive and appealing figure-of-eight route for enjoying Worcester’s riverside.”
