Winter may still be weeks away, but the Council isn’t wasting any time gearing up for the colder months!
The Council has officially kicked off its winter gritting programme, and teams are on high alert, ready to keep the county’s roads clear and safe as temperatures drop.
With 36 state-of-the-art gritting lorries and more than 50 experienced drivers on standby, Worcestershire is ready to roll, ensuring the roads are treated, allowing residents to travel around the County.
Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, praised the preparation efforts: "We’re always prepared for the winter here in Worcestershire. Our dedicated winter service team is primed and ready to jump into action the moment it's needed. I want to extend a huge thank you at the start of the programme to the entire crew for their hard work in keeping our roads safe throughout the season."
The Council has pulled out all the stops, stocking 16,750 tonnes of salt across its depots, stored in five large barns and a dome, all set to be deployed as needed. The salt supply is constantly monitored and replenished to ensure roads remain safe all winter long.
Worcestershire’s fleet of gritters is equipped with cutting-edge technology, allowing live tracking throughout their operations, ensuring that no icy patch goes untreated. Last year alone, these winter warriors covered over 50,000 miles across the county’s roads – that’s more than twice around the globe!
To top it off, there are over 1,400 grit bins strategically placed around the county, stocked and ready with a grit-and-salt mixture for public use, helping residents stay safe in their own neighbourhoods.
