Worcestershire County Council is proud to announce the launch of the new Supported Internship Bursary to help young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities enter the workforce.

The new bursary, made possible by Worcestershire County Council in collaboration with Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (WLEP), will see those taking part in the Supported Internship Programme eligible for a £1,000 bursary. This funding is so that learners can acquire work essentials for their internship such as PPE, uniforms, IT equipment and travel support.

The initiative will provide financial support to young adults with EHCPs (Education, Health, and Care Plans) that are embarking on a Supported Internship Programme in September 2024.

Worcestershire County Councillor Marc Bayliss, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Skills said he was proud to be part of the initiative; "The Supported Internship Bursary demonstrates our dedication to fostering the growth and development of the county’s future workforce, and championing employment inclusion. “We take pride in our commitment to support local incentives that can help boost the growth of the local economy and give people the best chance to succeed in life. By offering grant funding incentives like the Supported Internship Bursary, we are actively contributing to the development and investment of Worcestershire residents and businesses, and champion inclusivity.”

Judy Gibbs, Worcestershire County Council’s Head of Skills and Investment said: “We want to ensure young people in Worcestershire get the best opportunities to achieve and to be able to gain crucial skills without barriers. By providing financial support for essential work-related needs, we aim to ensure that that those young people have the resources they need to succeed in their internship and beyond. We’ve seen how successful our WA Bursary has been for young people signing up for a WA Account with Worcestershire Apprenticeships and embarking on their apprenticeship with them, now I hope the Supported Internship Bursary will be equally well received."

A supported internship is a year-long program that offers students with Education, Health Care Plans the valuable exposure to the working world through a series of placements. They also develop essential employability and functional skills, positioning them for success in gaining meaningful paid employment upon program completion.
