This festive season, Worcestershire County Council is spreading the word on reducing holiday waste with the help of two lovable mascots, Santa Paws and Rudog, the cute Dachshunds who are back to help remind residents of the joy of recycling!

Every year, waste generation spikes by nearly a third over the Christmas period, and this year the County Council is making it easier and more fun for everyone to do their part. From keeping food waste low to making the most of holiday recycling, residents will find simple tips and reminders to keep the season merry and eco-friendly.

Councillor Emma Stokes, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, says:
“We know the festive season is hectic, and often, without realising it, we buy and waste more than we need. This year, we’re sharing easy tips to help everyone reduce waste and recycle more. And our festive mascots, Santa Paws and Rudog, are here to make the message fun and memorable!"

“I want to thank everyone for joining us in these small changes that have a big impact on reducing waste and helping our community start the New Year greener than ever!"

Throughout December, Worcestershire County Council will be rolling out tips on their social media channels, covering everything from meal planning to creative leftover recipes and ideas for recycling holiday bottles, cans, cards, and even Christmas trees. Residents can follow along as Santa Paws and Rudog share their eco-friendly antics and helpful reminders on making this holiday season one of joy and conservation.

This initiative supports Worcestershire’s long-term commitment to a sustainable future. By reducing, reusing, repairing, recycling, and composting more, the county reduces raw material usage, saves energy, and protects natural resources, steps toward achieving the County Council's goal of being a Net Zero Council by 2050.

A quick reminder for residents: kerbside collection schedules may vary over the holidays. Check with your local District Council for any changes and visit the Council’s handy waste guide for information on where to dispose of holiday waste items.

To join in the holiday fun and get inspired on reducing waste, follow Worcestershire County Council on social media throughout December. Santa Paws and Rudog will be there, ready to help you waste less, recycle more, and make this holiday season the greenest yet!
