Staying safe and learning life skills this summer

Published date

Keeping children safe at home and when outside with friends is a key part of every day, not just the summer holidays.

Ready Steady Worcestershire’s Summer Holiday Activity and Food Programme held a Safety Day event at Blackwell Adventure Park near Bromsgrove.

100 children, aged between 5 to 16, attended the event, who are either in receipt of Free School Meals or from vulnerable or disadvantaged families.

There was a number of outdoor activities allowing the children to make the most of the sunshine including a Junior Tree Trek, Archery, Crate Stack Trees, Outdoor Climb, 3G Swing, Laser Tag and Fan Descender, and was all finished off with a nutritious packed lunch, drinks and snacks.

Councillor Tracey Onslow, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “It was lovely to see the children having a real adventure, with a smile on their faces and enjoying themselves, which is what summer is all about. There was a really important element to the day though, teaching children how to stay safe at home, and whilst out in their local community.   It was great to see everybody so engaged when learning life-saving skills.”

The day was also attended by the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Andrew Manning-Cox and his wife, who was particularly praising of the event, he said, “If just 1 child went away from today vowing never to carry a knife or tombstone into cold water, or light a fire to see what happens,  or go home to tell their mates and families what they have seen and heard, that in my view is a success; we of course hope many more than 1, and that a day like today plays an important part in the continuing process of breaking down “us and them” barriers when some young people visualise their relationships with statutory authorities.”

The county’s emergency services came along to deliver interactive talks and sessions include advice on how to stay safe in a number of scenarios.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service showed an interactive display explaining how to deal with fires safely, how to escape a fire and the dangers of smoke.

West Mercia Police talked about Stranger Danger, Online Safety, Bike safety, Road Safety, and Knife Crime.

Do it for Dylan were also on hand to help children and adults alike to understand the dangers of open water swimming, particularly in the hotter summer weather.

GETSAFE, Climb, and Hollieguard were also available to talk to children about the support they can offer them at the event.
