Worcestershire Trading Standards is offering key tips to help residents shop wisely during the January Sales, both in-store and online.

Head of Worcestershire Regulatory Services, Simon Wilkes said: “If you are hoping to grab a bargain, there are a few things to consider before you head to the shops, or open your device to shop online.”

Councillor Karen May, Cabinet Member for Communities at Worcestershire County Council, also highlighted the importance of consumer awareness, she added: “It’s vital for residents to understand their consumer rights and recognise potential risks when shopping.”

Online shopping tips:

  • Stick to reputable businesses or check for a UK address and phone number to ensure compliance with UK distance selling rules.
  • Avoid paying by bank transfer; instead, use secure payment methods like credit cards, which provide added protection for purchases over £100.
  • Look for a padlock symbol and ‘https://’ in the website address for secure transactions.

  • Research thoroughly before making significant purchases or investments, and avoid being rushed into decisions.

Parcel delivery scams

  • This common scam involves fake delivery notifications. Avoid calling provided numbers or giving personal information. Contact PhonepayPlus on 0800 500 212 for guidance on suspicious delivery cards.

Counterfeit goods:

Cheap products from car boot sales, internet auctions, or social media might be fakes. These are often low quality, unsafe, and linked to organised crime. Stick to trusted retailers for your purchases.

Returns and refunds

  • Gifts: Only the buyer can typically return items unless the shop offers an extended policy for presents. Check with retailers before purchasing.
  • Refund rights: You can return faulty or misdescribed goods within 30 days. After this period, the responsibility to prove a fault lies with the consumer.
  • Online purchases: Distance selling rules allow refunds up to 14 days after delivery for non-bespoke items.

And finally, always keep receipts or proof of purchase to simplify returns, and act quickly if issues arise. By staying informed, you can make the most of the January Sales without falling victim to common pitfalls.
