Resistance bands session next week at Redditch Library

Published date

A pop-up mini exercise session with resistance bands is being held at Redditch Library next week.

The event is taking place between 10:30am to 12:30pm on 27 July 2022.

At the event, fitness professionals and the Living Well for Longer team will demonstrate various exercises you can do using resistance bands, encouraging you to have a go and handing out FREE resistance bands.

Resistance bands are a great way to exercise various parts of the body to maintain muscle strength, posture, increase mobility, and help with joint pain. Exercising with resistance bands can help anyone, but we are encouraging over 50s in Worcestershire to use them to help stay active and well.

Public Health Worcestershire’s new project ‘Living Well for Longer’ encourages over 50s across the county to keep active and well in later life. The project aims to improve mental and physical wellbeing, slow down age-related functional decline and keep over 50s independent for as long as possible.

The Living Well for Longer team are offering a free resistance band and exercise booklet to residents over 50. To get you started the exercise booklet contains a set of 8 seated resistance band exercises that are easy to follow and designed to help maintain and improve your strength as you age.

We recommend you complete these exercises at least twice a week and use them to complement any current physical activity.

Resistance bands are strong, elastic bands that can be used to exercise all parts of the body. Resistance bands can not only build and maintain muscle strength but can also improve your strength and posture, increase mobility, and help with joint pain. The benefits of using resistance bands are:

  • builds muscle strength
  • improved muscle function, bone health and balance
  • just 10 minute sessions can make a difference!
  • reduced risk of falls
  • suitable for all abilities (seated or standing)

Councillor Karen May, Cabinet Member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: “We want everyone across the county to be able to live healthier and longer lives. The Living Well for Longer in Worcestershire project is a fantastic project by Public Health Worcestershire that invites over 50s across the county to keep on moving and encourages positive aging.

Resistance band exercises have several health benefits and are an effective and simple way to keep you active. This is a great opportunity for residents, to get started, please visit your local library to collect your FREE resistance bands and exercise leaflet.”

Anyone over 50 years old can pick up a free resistance band and exercise leaflet from any Worcestershire library. Just ask at the counter.
