Remember your Voter ID when having your say in County Council elections

Authored on

Residents across the county are being urged to remember their ID when they go to vote on 1 May.

Voters will need to show photo ID at polling stations before they can receive their ballot paper.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport
  • a UK or EEA drivers’ licence
  • some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or an Oyster 60+ card
  • the free Voter Authority Certificate

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID online at the Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’) pages of the GOV.UK website or by completing a paper form and sending this to your local district council’s electoral services team.

You’ll need to apply by 5:00pm on 23 April 2025 to get a Voter Authority Certificate for the 1 May 2025 elections in England.

The full list of accepted ID is available on the Electoral Commission’s website, along with more information about the requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID, at the Voter ID pages of the Electoral Commission website.
