Over three thousand children signing up for Worcestershire County Council’s Summer Reading Challenge.
This year's challenge continues to inspire young readers across the county, encouraging them to explore the joys of reading during the summer holidays.
The Challenge developed by The Reading Agency and delivered by public libraries invites children aged 4-11 to read six or more books over the summer break. The aim is to foster a love of reading, improve literacy skills, and maintain reading levels during the school holidays.
This year’s challenge themed around ‘Marvellous Makers’, runs throughout the summer so there is still plenty of time for children to join in with the fun before it wraps up on 14 September.
Hannah Perrott, Assistant Director for Communities at Worcestershire County Council said: “We are delighted to see such a fantastic number of children taking part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Reading is a vital skill that opens a world of opportunities, and it is wonderful to see our young people so engaged and enthusiastic about books!”
"We would like to extend our thanks to the parents, carers, and library staff who support and encourage children throughout the challenge. Their efforts play a crucial role in making this initiative a success year after year."
A packed schedule of Challenge themed events will be taking place throughout the summer. From junk modelling to painting, dance, and music, libraries offer many exciting activities for children to enjoy and explore. Find out what’s on at your local library on the library events and activities webpage of the County Council website.
Our library team and super storytellers will be at National Trust Croome on Tuesday 13 August, 11am-3pm, for story time sessions, bookmark decorating, chats about the Marvellous Makers Summer Reading Challenge, and more. This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue.
