Newly qualified social workers celebrated during event at County Hall

Worcestershire has gained 37 newly qualified social workers to help support residents, after they all completed their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).

The ASYE is a 12-month, employer-led and employment-based programme of support and assessment for newly qualified social workers.

A celebration event was held recently at County Hall in Worcester to recognise the great achievement, hard work and success of the county’s newest social workers.

The social workers were supported throughout the process by the County Council’s Social Work Academy, a professional hub providing social work staff with a clear framework for professional development, ensuring staff can thrive and achieve the highest quality practice.

It provides access to relevant professional development and resources to enhance skills, increase knowledge and equip staff to progress their career and prepare for the challenging but incredible career ahead of them.

One social worker to complete their training said: “It was really nice to celebrate the end of the ASYE. It was noted that we were ‘pandemic’ students, a fact that I had put to the back of my mind, it was good to reflect on my journey from my adjusted 50 day placement to the end of - my blink and you miss it – ASYE!

“I really enjoyed completing my 100 day placement and ASYE year in my current team and I’m very grateful to my team members, my two Advanced Social Work Practitioners, and the Social Work Academy for all of their support and advice.”

The County Council’s Assistant Director of Adult Social Care, the Social Work Academy Manager and ASYE Lead, were all in attendance.

Kerry McCrossan, Assistant Director of Adult Social Care, Worcestershire County Council, said: “It was great to be able to take time out and celebrate our social workers achievements, in both adult and children’s social care, reaching the end of their ASYE programme. This year is a really important period for our students, as it allows them to learn in real time, and gives them the tools and experience to refer back to as they continue to develop in their chosen careers.”

Maria White, Assistant Director for Safeguarding Services at Worcestershire Children First, added: “Celebrating our social workers and their achievements at every stage is really important as we guide our staff through career development, and it was great to see so many of the graduating cohort there to celebrate!”

Employees received a certificate, a token gift of appreciation to support them in their practice and light refreshments to congratulate them on their achievements.

The Celebration Events will be held every six months going forward to congratulate future Newly Qualified Social Workers completing their ASYE qualification.

The County Council continue to work with our partners across Worcestershire, including greater integration between health and social care, to support people to plan for all stages of life and enable people to lead the lives they want to live, as independently as possible.
