Worcestershire County Council has welcomed a new partnership between GLP Training and Speller Metcalfe to deliver Construction Skills Bootcamps, helping local people gain industry-specific skills and job opportunities.
Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses for Worcestershire residents aged 19 and over, designed to reskill, upskill, or gain new skills to improve job prospects.
The programme, funded by the UK Government’s Skills for Life initiative and managed by Worcestershire County Council, works with local training providers to equip people with skills needed in high-demand industries.
GLP Training, based in Worcester, has partnered with Speller Metcalfe, a regional principal construction contractor headquartered in Malvern, to launch a ‘Building Skills Bootcamp’.
The programme provides practical training in skill areas such as plastering, plumbing, painting and decorating, with participants guaranteed an interview with Speller Metcalfe upon successful completion.
Edward Pearson, Account Executive at GLP Training emphasised the programme’s impact, "As a Worcestershire-based provider, we’re committed to reducing the industry skills gap and supporting local people back into work. By working with Worcestershire County Council and the Department for Work and Pensions, we ensure our Skills Bootcamps give participants essential theoretical and practical training in high-demand trades."
Sam Minett-Smith, EHS Risk & Opportunity Manager at Speller Metcalfe, highlighted the need for skilled workers; “The construction industry is facing a real skills shortage so finding good staff with the right skills and qualities for tomorrow's workforce is very important. Through Skills Bootcamps, we can find talented individuals in our region to help deliver our key projects, such as the Scala Theatre regeneration in Worcester. We are really happy to support Skills Bootcamps in Worcestershire by offering guaranteed interviews once learners have completed training."
Skills Bootcamps are free to individuals, take fewer than 12 weeks to complete, and do not impact government benefits. Participants also benefit from direct employer links, with a guaranteed job interview upon completion.
Councillor Adam Kent, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Skills at Worcestershire County Council, said, "Partnerships like this deliver real benefits to Worcestershire’s economy. Investing in skills is investing in our future, and construction is at the heart of economic growth. Major projects need skilled workers, and construction-focused Skills Bootcamps are equipping people with in-demand skills that lead to employment, strengthening both our workforce and economic resilience."
The Building Skills Bootcamp will take place at GLP Training’s Worcester-based training centres. For more information on Skills Bootcamps, visit the Skills Bootcamps webpages or call 0300 666 3 666 (option 3).
