Has your relationship with the news changed?

This February, Worcestershire Libraries, in partnership with The British Library, through the Living Knowledge Network (a UK-wide partnership of national and public libraries), will be hosting a new touring exhibition, talks and screenings called ‘Breaking the News’.

This free programme of events, which is only available in 30 libraries nationally, will explore issues of choice, interpretation, truth and trust in the news today.

The following libraries across the county will be hosting the touring exhibition on the following dates:

Library Date
The Hive 12 February to 26 February
Bromsgrove Library 14 March to 25 March
Kidderminster Library 28 March to 9 April
Malvern Library 12 April to 23 April
Redditch Library 26 April to 7 May

At a time when we are experiencing some of the biggest news headlines in recent history, interest and trust in the news are in decline. It is also a time when we are all changing how and when we consume news, relying on social media more than traditional platforms.

Councillor Matt Dormer, Cabinet Member with Responsibilities for Communities, said, “This fascinating programme of events provides a non-judgmental forum in which we can all explore our own relationships with the news today.

“In a world full of misinformation, it’s important for us all to look at our own media habits and make sure the news we consume is accurate. This thought-provoking event will also provide us with some fact-checking tools and tips to help us navigate the news and read beyond the headlines.”

The Breaking the News exhibition, inspired by the UK’s largest news collection, which dates from 1513 with the earliest surviving printed news report on the Battle of Flodden, showcases what makes a story through real headlines from newspapers, TV, radio and digital media.

It is also an opportunity to discover stories from local archives that have shaped your local news, including original Worcestershire newspapers dating back to 1713.

Talks will be led by national and local journalists and experts from the University of Worcester. They will focus on the rise of fake news and how to spot it, a decline in trust in media together with a celebration of regional news and its significance at the heart of local communities.

This exhibition and programme of events will tour selected Worcestershire libraries from 12 February to 7 May 2022.
