The front of Droitwich Library

In its first year, Libraries Unlocked has transformed how customers and community groups can make the most of their local libraries.

Since Libraries Unlocked was launched in Droitwich and Stourport Libraries in June 2022, library opening hours have increased by 85%, providing more flexibility and convenience for customers and community groups.

Customer who have upgraded to free Libraries Unlocked membership can now visit the library between 8am – 8pm, Monday to Saturday, including previously closed days.

Library staff are still available throughout the week to provide much valued support.

Feedback from customers has revealed that the service is particularly popular with working people and working parents, people who prefer to use the library at quieter times and people looking to spend longer periods of time in the library.

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member for Communities at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Libraries are at the heart of our communities across Worcestershire, and I am thrilled to witness the incredible response to Libraries Unlocked in Droitwich and Stourport.

The overwhelming participation and engagement by our valued community members have reaffirmed the importance of providing accessible and flexible library services. Libraries Unlocked has truly unlocked the potential of our libraries to serve as vibrant hubs for learning, connection, and community development.”

One year after going live, 68% of active library members at Stourport Library and 52% at Droitwich Library have signed up to Libraries Unlocked.

There have been 13,599 library visits, 17,314 issues, and 3,608 computer sessions, highlighting library-goers’ enthusiasm and engagement with the extended service.

Libraries Unlocked doesn’t just give customers more time to borrow books, they can also:

  • visit to use study space, library computers and online reference services,
  • meet friends and to attend library events and activities.
  • book spaces through free meeting hire
