Historic lighting of Beacon on the Malvern Hills for Platinum Jubilee

Published date

A specially designed beacon will be set alight at the peak of the Worcestershire Beacon on the Malvern Hills at 9:45pm on 2 June to celebrate the historic milestone of the Platinum Jubilee.

There is a long tradition of celebrating royal jubilees, weddings and coronations with the lighting of beacons.

A beacon chain, once used as a tool for communication, has now become a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

The Worcestershire Beacon will be one of more 1,500 beacons across the country and beyond to be lit on the night of 2 June.

Ahead of the beacon being lit by Vice Lord Lieutenant Roger Brunt CBE, a local bugler will officially announce the lighting at 9:40pm with a unique Bugle Call written for the occasion called Majesty.

Vice Lord Lieutenant Roger Brunt CBE said: ā€œIā€™m delighted to be lighting this historic beacon on the fitting Worcestershire Beacon on the Malvern Hills to mark the momentous occasion. This will be the first time a British monarch has marked a Platinum Jubilee, 70 years as Sovereign. I would like to invite local communities and residents to join me and take part in this special moment.ā€

Those wishing to be part of the beacon lighting are advised to ensure they arrive at the peak of the Worcestershire Beacon in good time, ensure they are wearing suitable footwear and clothing and to bring a torch.

The Worcestershire Beacon event is being supported by Worcestershire County Council, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Hills Trust.
