A Community Builder from Droitwich has praised the impact that Libraries Unlocked has had on her ability to offer support to local residents, in particular guests from Ukraine.

Droitwich CVS is an independent charity that supports, promotes and develops community and voluntary action in the Droitwich Spa area to improve connections & the wellbeing of local people.

Thanks to Libraries Unlocked, which has extended the opening hours at Droitwich Library, the CVS have been able to host volunteer events at the library to engage the wider community and offer support to Ukrainians living in the area.

These events have really seen the town come together, with partners getting involved from Tennis in the Lido, Droitwich Heritage Centre, Citizen’s Advice, St. Vincent de Paul Society and many individuals in the town.

The library provided free space for fortnightly Ukrainian Connections during Libraries Unlocked opening hours over the past year.

Lucy, from Droitwich CVS, who is a regular library user during Libraries Unlocked hours, said: “Droitwich Library is a fantastic space and to be able to have access to it from 8am to 8pm, has given the building a new lease of life. As a Community Builder, the use of Libraries Unlocked has enabled me to work with local residents and to partner with other organisations to hold events and activities to support the local community. This would not have been possible without longer library opening hours and free access to library space.”

Councillor Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member for Communities at Worcestershire County Council, said:  “It's truly inspiring to witness how Libraries Unlocked is facilitated meaningful connections among individuals within our community. The overwhelming participation and engagement by our valued community members have reaffirmed the importance of providing accessible and flexible library services. Libraries Unlocked has, without a doubt, unlocked the full potential of our libraries to serve as vibrant hubs for learning, connection, and community development.”

Since Libraries Unlocked was launched in Droitwich and Stourport Libraries in June 2022, library opening hours have increased by 85%, providing more flexibility and convenience for customers and community groups.

Customers who have upgraded to a free Libraries Unlocked membership can now visit the library between 8am – 8pm, Monday to Saturday, including previously closed days.

Library staff are still available throughout the week to provide much valued support.

Feedback from customers has revealed that the service is particularly popular with working people and working parents, people who prefer to use the library at quieter times and people looking to spend longer periods of time in the library.

Anyone wishing to upgrade to Libraries Unlocked membership, will need to complete an induction, which can be organised by visiting the library in person or by calling 01905 822722.
