The footbridge, which has been installed as part of the A4440 Southern Link Road improvements, was announced as a winner at the coveted Structural Steel Design Award.
The bridge was one of four projects to be awarded the British Construction Steelwork Association’s highest prize in the 2021 awards, held in London on 28 September.
This follows the bridge’s success in the recent 2021 Bridges Design Awards, where it won joint first place in the category for projects below £5 million.
The judging panel described the bridge as “An excellent example of how inspired architectural details can create a ‘statement’ bridge. Simply rotating the square cords through 45 degrees has produced a dramatic shadow line. This, coupled with clever detailing at the supports, gives a pleasing slender floating expression to the bridge. Installation of the main span in just two hours minimised disruption to the busy junction below.”
Councillor Alan Amos, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “This bridge is a fantastic addition to the ever improving infrastructure that we’re installing across the county, and it’s great that this has been recognised with another design award.
“A huge amount of work goes into planning, designing, fabricating and installing bridges like this and it’s pleasing to see everyone involved receive recognition for their efforts.
“The bridge is an important part of the wider Southern Link Road improvements and it’s further evidence of the Council’s commitment to improving the walking and cycling network across the county.”
The award was presented to Worcestershire County Council with its construction team comprising of contractors Alun Griffiths Ltd, designers COWI, Burroughs and Moxon Architects, fabricator SH Structures and ecologists TACP.

The Structural Steel Design Awards celebrate the excellence of the United Kingdom in the field of steel construction, particularly demonstrating its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics, sustainability and innovation. Each year the awards scheme attracts many excellent entries from widely ranging projects. Successful projects are expected to have a minimum threshold of excellence in architectural and engineering terms and to be cost effective. Each year’s entries reflect the increasingly high standards that are being achieved, not only in design and all aspects of fabrication, but also in short construction programmes and accuracy on site.
Hams Way Footbridge, along with the recently constructed Crookbarrow Way Footbridge and Broomhall Way Footbridge, provide safe crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the County Council’s project to dual the A4440 from Junction 7 of the M5 to Powick Roundabout.
