Customer service assistants deal with customer questions, purchases and complaints.
- Answer customer questions by phone, email, webchat, social media or in person
- Give quotations and check product availability
- Sell products or services and take payments
- Handle complaints or pass them to a supervisor
- Add customer information onto a computer
- Track orders and arrange deliveries
You could work in an office, in a contact centre or at a store.
You may need to wear a uniform.
Customer Service Assistants tend to work between 37 to 40 hours a week. You could work evenings, weekends and bank holidays on shifts.
Starting: £17,000
Experienced: £25,000
You can apply for jobs if you have customer service experience, for example from working in a shop, hotel or contact centre.
Employers might want you to have:
- some GCSEs or equal qualifications
- good communication skills
- a friendly personality
You can take a college course before applying for a job, such as a Level 1 Certificate in Customer Service.
You could also do a customer service intermediate apprenticeship or a customer service specialist advanced apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
