Starting: £15,000
Experienced: £20,000
You do not need any particular qualifications to become a museum assistant, although you'll usually need a good general standard of education, especially in English and maths. You'll be in a stronger position when looking for work if you have:
- experience in customer care or facilities security
- an interest in museums and their services
- volunteering experience in a museum, gallery or heritage attraction
You can get into this job through an apprenticeship, volunteering or applying directly.
You could get into this work through apprenticeships that give you skills in customer service, security, museums education or conservation. You'll usually need some GCSEs, usually including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship, 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
Volunteering in a museum and getting work experience will help you get a better understanding of the role, and to make contacts who may help you to find paid work.
