Personal assistants carry out support tasks for individuals and managers including administration, diary management and event planning.

- Organise your manager's diary and make appointments

- Organise and maintain office systems
- Take notes at meetings, produce reports and presentations
- Make travel arrangements
- Look after visitors
- Supervise other admin staff
As a Personal Assistant, you could work in an office. You may need to wear smart business clothes.
Personal Assistant tend to work between 37 to 40 hours a week. You may also work occasional evenings.
Starting: £18,000
Experienced: £35,000
You can get into this job through a university course, a college course, an apprenticeship, working your way into the role or through a specialist course run by private training organisation.
You could do a business-related foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree. You'll usually need 1 or 2 A levels, or equivalent, for a foundation degree or higher national diploma, or 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree.
You could take a college qualification to help you get a job as a junior personal assistant. Entry requirements for these courses will vary depending on the course level. Courses include:
- Level 2 Diploma in Business Support
- Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration
- T Level in Management and Administration
You could do an advanced level apprenticeship in business administration and work your way up to a personal assistant position. You'll usually need 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and Maths, for an advanced apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
You could find a temporary job to get administration experience. You could then apply for permanent roles. If you're already working as an administrator or secretary, you could become a personal assistant through company training and promotion. To get work, you'll usually need GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) in English and maths, A levels, or equivalent qualifications.
