Park rangers look after parks and other green spaces in towns and cities. They help to make these places pleasant and relaxing for people to visit. Park rangers keep parks clean and tidy. They pick up any litter they find. They also help to keep the park safe. They check that the paths are clear and that any slides, swings and other playthings are in good condition. They may do simple repairs to anything that is broken.
- Keeping park areas clean and tidy
- Walking or cycling around to keep a check on things
- Making sure people are not causing trouble or damage
- Running events such as guided walks or fun days
- Locking and unlocking park gates
- Fixing things that are broken
- Helping with gardening work
Park rangers spend a lot of time outdoors, and this can be in all weathers. They may work in several parks and spend time travelling between them.
Most park rangers work between 37 and 40 hours a week, but some are part-time. The work can involve early morning starts, evenings and weekends.
Starting salary: £18,000
Experienced salary: up to £28,000
You do not always have to pass level 2 exams to become a park ranger however most organisations will ask for a minimum of level 2 qualification for this role You could also apply for an apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications.
The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
