Motor vehicle fitters repair and replace worn or damaged tyres, exhausts, batteries and parts.
- Test batteries and other parts of an engine
- Check tyres and exhausts
- Replace or repair faulty parts
- Balance and re-align wheels
- Check a vehicle's tracking
- Repair punctures
- Give customers advice
- Attend breakdowns
- Carry out MOT tests
- Repair suspension systems, steering and brakes
- Do routine vehicle inspections to check they are safe
You could work at a garage or in a workshop.
Your working environment may be physically demanding.
You may need to wear protective clothing.
As a Motor Vehicle Fitter you will usually work around 42 to 44 hours a week. Sometimes this involves working on an evening or at a weekend and Bank Holidays.
Starting salary: £17,000
Experienced salary: up to £29,000
You could start as a trainee with a garage and work your way up. Most employers may expect you to have GCSEs at grades 9 to 3. However, some employers may be more flexible and look at your practical abilities.
You could take a college course to get some of the skills needed for this job. Courses include:
- Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Fitting Principles
- Level 2 Diploma in Specialist Tyre Fitting Competence
- Level 2 Extended Certificate in Vehicle Technology
You could also apply for an apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be component enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
